Since 1985, the college has established the major of industrial design. Since the Ministry of education adjusted the catalogue of undergraduate majors in 2012, industrial design is divided into two majors, which are respectively subordinate to the next level discipline of Engineering "Mechanical Engineering" and the next level discipline of art "design". The college began to recruit students under the professional names of industrial design (science students) and product design (art students) in 2013. In 2014, the University arranged the enrollment of industrial design specialty in the ocean college in the form of this specialty. Since then, the college has only carried out the teaching of product design specialty.

Professional orientation

Professional orientation: Based on Guangxi and the Pearl River Delta economic circle and serving the industry, it provides talent guarantee for local economic construction and the development of creative industries.

Training objectives: this major trains application-oriented talents who have solid theoretical knowledge of product design, good professional skills and quality, systematic comprehensive design ability, and can engage in product design, management, scientific research and teaching in enterprises and institutions, professional design institutions, teaching and scientific research institutions.

This major has gradually formed the talent training characteristics of "thick foundation, heavy connection, deep intersection and strong ability", and established a modular theory teaching system, including "design expression, aesthetic culture, design method principle and design scheme realization".
